पाऊस

तुला 'जीवना'चे दिले दान आहे
तुझा जन्म हे जीवना दान आहे
मला कोरड्या रूदनाची समस्या
तुझे क्रंदणे हे समाधान आहे
 
नभी वीज ती गूज सांगे मनाचे
मनी अंकुरे बीज आलिंगनाचे
कुठे दूर ऐकावया येत आहे
मला मेघमल्हार तव स्पंदनाचे
 
घनावीण वीणा न वाजे मनाची
विणू वीण दोघे तनाशी तनाची
अरे कृष्णवर्णा तुला काय वर्णू

लिलाव

मैत्रीत भेटल्याचा जो हावभाव केला
घेता मिठीत त्यांनी पाठीत घाव केला

माझ्या घरात आले होऊन पाहुणे ते
मजलाच काढण्याचा त्यांनी ठराव केला

मी जिंकलो तरीही राहून शल्य गेले
माझेच दोस्त होते ज्यांनी उठाव केला

आमंत्रणे कशाला देता कलेवराला
'गेल्या'वरी प्रितीचा खोटा बनाव केला

मागावयास आले ते सर्व देत गेलो
सारे विकून आता माझाहि  भाव केला

माझ्या विरोधकांचा त्यांनी विरोध केला
राहीन एकटा हे जाणून डाव केला

कंगाल पार झालो देऊन मी उधाऱ्या
देणेकरीच माझे ज्यांनी लिलाव केला

आता सुरू नव्याने माझा प्रवास झाला

माझे सवंगडी ते हा दूर भास झाला
आता सुरू नव्याने माझा प्रवास झाला

ह्या गोल जीवनाचा आहे परीघ मोठा
जो ‘आत’ शोध घेतो त्याचाच ‘व्यास’ झाला

होता सभोवताली सारा कुटुंब-कबिला
वाटे तरी ‘अखेरी’ अज्ञातवास झाला

श्रीमंत दालनांच्या दारी उभा भिकारी
ह्या इंडियात ऐसा नंगा-विकास झाला

प्यादे गरीब साधे छळतात त्यास सारे
झालो वजीर जेव्हा त्याचाहि त्रास झाला

सारेच कोसळावे आता असेच व्हावे
कोणास ना टळावे आता असेच व्हावे

माझ्या कलेवराला जाळून त्या झळांनी
थोडे तुम्ही जळावे आता असेच व्हावे

ह्या एकटेपणाची शिक्षा दिली जयांनी,
त्यांना हि ते छळावे आता असेच व्हावे

वैषम्य हेच की ते माझ्याच आतड्याचे
हे त्यांसही कळावे आता असेच व्हावे

ना मारले कि त्यांनी मज तारलेहि नाही
निष्क्रिय पाघळावे आता असेच व्हावे

Ketan Mehta's "Mirch Masala" - - some thoughts which overflowed my mind!


 I was always big fan of Hindi parallel movies. Would not claim that I have watched too many of them, but whatever few of them I may have watched, I always admired them from bottom of my heart.

I love watching mainstream movies also and I strongly believe that mainstream or so to say typical box movies also do exhibit a lot of art performances, but nonetheless parallel movies were always very close to my heart.

I am so glad that now there does not exist anything called parallel movie. In other words, parallel movies also became mainstream movies, or parallel movie makers perhaps learnt the 'art' of making a real 'art' movie which can be admired by any class or which also can be box office hit, or may be taste of people really became classy or matured enough to watch parallel sort of movies these days. Recent one, Lunch Box is the best example of this (though I did not find it too appealing to me)

Mainstream movies used to be like our playback singers; whereas parallel movies were like classical singers who would perform in concerts like 'Sawai Gandharwa'.

Anyway, I have no knowledge of either of these arts, but as an ordinary viewer and admirer of those movies, I felt like sharing my thoughts with all.

All these thoughts started flowing in mind after I watched Ketan Mehta's 'Mirch Masala' last night after a long time.

I remembered seeing this movie quite some time back on some TV channel or perhaps on Doordarshan (solo channel of our childhood days - thanks DD).

This movie, 'Mirch Masala' is an excellent creation by Ketan Mehta and his crew. Actors included most dynamic and versatile acting stalwarts like Smita Patil, Nasruddin Shah, Om Puri as centre cast and supported by long list of supporting actors including Deepti Naval, Suresh Oberoi, Raj Babbar (almost a guest appearance), Mohan Gokhale (he died at very young age, but during our childhood days he was one of the well known actors in Marathi cinema and television. I still remember his Marathi TV serial 'Shwetambara'), Supriya Pathak, Ratna Pathak, Dina Pathak, and most surprisingly in almost a side role none other than Paresh Rawal (when I watched this movie many years back, perhaps I did not recognize Paresh Rawal. He was not so known then. Its fun to watch such lead actors of today's time in such inconsequential support roles in some of those old movies. This shows how much struggle they must have made to reach this stage, and then I feel very pity about this great 'art industry' which gives so many movies to children of ex-stars like Sonakshi Sinha, Akshay Khanna, Fardeen Khan....list is really too long)

I do not think that anyone needs to say anything in praise of performances of these actors. But the one who outclassed everyone was Om Puri. Almost 28 years back, he played a role of 70-80 year old man, who braves to fight against tyranny of Nasruddin Shah (a police officer during British rule) and ultimately sacrifices his life. Om Puri was brilliant in depicting this character of brave old security guard of ‘Mirch Karakhana’, but what admired even more is his make-up. His make-up man and movie Director’s keenness in ensuring that at that young age (Om Puri technically never looked young :)) Om Puri should still appear old of 70-80s. One natural advantage obviously was Om Puri’s face, which has natural wrinkles on to it, but none the less, make-up man has really did an extremely wonderful job in Om Puri’s make-up. Even Om Puri’s hair, beard and hair colour has come out so perfect to suit his muslim old man’s character!

Suresh Oberoi (what a base voice he has got, at times I love to hear him more than Amitabh Bachhan or Om PurI0 was another surprise. He was good actor and he has done some nice roles too in mainstream movies. But watching him in the role of ‘Mukhi’ was really a wonderful experience. He did very balanced performance. His character is of a typical orthodox male chauvinist head of the village, who takes pride in ‘keeping a mistress’; not caring about his own wife or family, he is submissive to Nasruddin Shah (the Police Officer); but does not lick his shoes (avoiding to say what they say in English for this Marathi proverb) and not at all kind hearted; but not as ruthless as Nasir is shown. He was very well suited to his role and looked fabulous in that typical Gujarathi (or Kathewadi) costume.

Nasir has done very well again, doubtlessly. But I felt that he was not suited for the role. He neither had physique of a cruel; ruthless; tyrannical Police Officer nor a villain-ish face. I think Ketan Mehta has always tried to show Nasir in those days’ Police Officer’s costume to cover Nasir’s physical limitations and have got typical Indian ‘mardani’ moustache to cover Nasir’s calm & caring face. Perhaps despite umpteen effort, they could not overcome Nasir’s these natural limitations.

Overall, movie was indeed great experience. It left with storm of questions in my mind, such questions answering them would not only be extremely tough, but daring to think of those answers itself makes one very uneasy. We are talking of rapes and sexual exploitations today, perhaps more due to media publicity (and I am not saying that this is wrong), but so many such incidences of persecution on women must have happened on the past.

Movie goes on to show so many things. It’s not merely about Nasir’s oppression on women, he is equally cruel to men. One scene of the movie really shakes you from bottom. After Smita Patil slaps Nasir for his attempt of sexual advancement towards her, Smita Patil runs away and takes shelter in ‘Mirch Karakhana’, Nasir is adamant that he must get Smita Patil for his sexual pleasure, who is safe behind close doors of ‘Mirch Karakhana’ guarded by Om Puri bravely and firmly, not allowing anyone to dare entering inside. Nasir gives ultimatum to villagers to handover Smita Patil to him; else threatens them to burn down the village to ashes. Sheepish Villagers, humbled and humiliated, go to Nasir and request him that they will hand her over if Nasi promises that he will never after make such demands. Within no time, Nasir ridicules such request and demands the name of the person who made such request.
